What is Family Therapy?
Family therapy is sometimes referred to as couple therapy or family therapy, family systems therapy, or family counseling. It focuses on families and couples in relationships to promote change and growth. It stems from the belief that family relationships play an important role in mental health. The different schools of family therapy all believe that family involvement is important in treating both “individual” and “family” issues.
Families directly participate in therapy sessions. Therapy sessions focus on understanding each family member’s feelings and behaviors within the context of their family. Therapists strive to support and strengthen the family dynamic in order to help members work together to solve problems. A family therapist regulates conversations in order to concentrate on the assets, knowledge, and support of the family.
