Leo Massey, LMSW

Leo‘s style is empathetic, passionate, and direct as he understands the importance of forming authentic connections with the individuals he works with. By meeting his clients where they are and fostering a radically genuine therapeutic relationship, Leo makes sure to create an environment that promotes openness, self-awareness, willingness, and active engagement in the therapeutic process.

Leo utilizes an evidence-based approach to therapy when working with individuals one-on-one and in group settings. Leo received DBT (dialectical behavior therapy) training from Behavioral Tech Institute under the supervision of renowned DBT expert, Andre Ivanoff, Ph.D., is currently attending the LGBTQ+ CBT (cognitive-behavioral therapy) intensive training with Yale’s Mental Health Initiative, and continues to educate himself by taking culturally sensitive trainings around working with Jewish and Israeli clients, including “Understanding Your Jewish Clients: Cultural Competency When Working With the Jewish Population” presented by Rutgers University. Leo‘s toolbox of evidence-based treatments includes CBT (cognitive-behavioral therapy), exposure therapy, ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy), DBT (dialectical behavior therapy), and DBT-PE (dialectical behavior therapy prolonged exposure).

Leo‘s experience includes helping children, teenagers, and young adults with difficulties around generalized anxiety disorder, OCD, PTSD, C-PTSD, BPD, suicidality, NSSI (non-suicidal self-injury), depression, intergenerational trauma, interpersonal trauma, grief/bereavement, ADHD, anger management, low self-esteem, religious conflicts, and LGBTQ+ related issues.

Leo is passionate about working with the LGBTQ+ community, the Jewish and Israeli population, young adults, children, and adolescents. Before entering the mental health field, Leo worked in the entertainment industry at various talent agencies, talent management firms, and production companies, giving him a background in entertainment and marketing.

Leo holds an MS in Social Work from Columbia University and a BA in Film from Pennsylvania State University. Leo is currently interested in pursuing a doctorate in psychology to research the impact of culture, trauma, and sexuality on an individual’s life trajectory. Leo looks forward to supporting you in achieving your therapeutic goals!
